Sent my immigration story to Obama through this site. Please do your part and send your story.

Every story counts towards making Congress take some action to resolve current Immigration issues.

Employment based immigration is a very small part of legal immigration.

Here is a break down of legal immigration #s for 2006 according to Yearbook of Immigration Statistics, published by Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Office of Immigration Statistics (OIS) (available at Spotlight on Legal Immigration to the United States (http://www.migrationinformation.org/USfocus/display.cfm?id=651) By Gretchen Reinemeyer and Jeanne Batalova | Migration Policy Institute, November 2007).

1,266,264 immigrants were granted legal residence in 2006.

159,081 immigrants who received green cards through sponsorship from their US employers accounted for 12.6% of all legal permanent residents.

However, 87,702 (or 55.1%) of the employment-sponsored immigrants were spouses and children of principal applicants.

The share of employment-preference immigrants has varied between 3.3 percent (59,525) in 1991 and 22 percent (246,878) in 2005.

The other categories are family preference (802,712), refugee + asylee (216,454), Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986 + parolees (43,546) and Diversity Lottery (44,471).

Employment based immigration is legal. However, it may help to add legal to the title.

Employment based immigration is skilled. I think employment based immigration includes cooks, priests, .... They consider themselves to be skilled just like everyone else!

If you just ask for improving legal immigration, they will improve family based or asylum.

As some persons learnt yesterday, legal immigration has very low priority as compared to undocumented. Similarly, employment based immigration has no priority in legal immigration!

thanks for explaining. my suggestion then is to go to school on F1 (maybe ?) and get a degree that can help him/her get a job that qualifies under H1b.

Our main goal to solve the retrogression problem.

Since you can study under H4 you cannot apply for F1 (My wife tried that already) :)

I am not sure we want to gag him - it's kind of late too to do that. But letting the sponsors know they are encouraging hate-groups is good. If this would work CNN itself may have pulled the plug on him

Why will it move PDs faster than now? Thanks.
could it be that ppl will not be able to sneak in with pre-approved labor now? if there is a significant number doing that, the PDs will move faster. Congrats IV on this achievement!

Yes amitjoey. thanks a lot for that help. I wish more people participated in it. infact if more members can continue to do it today it will be very helpful. yesterday there were at least 3 mails from reporters expressing interest in us. This was because a few people wrote to them about IV and requested them to do a followup article abut us. I had found about 72 articles yesterday morning and we had more than 50 potential reporters to contact. It is not easy to get press coverage and this is one opportunity where we can captitalize on the venture captitalist story (no pun intentended).
Can we know names of these reporters who wanted to know about us? Also, is there any update on what QGA is doing on getting the word out about IV to the lawmakers? In her response to me, Clinton did not appear to indicate any knowledge of the severity of the problem that legal immigrants are facing due to retrogression.

I am not a chartist or day trader if that is what you want to know. I have worked in high frequency Stat-Arb trading which also does micro caps sometimes.

    smisachu,

Where can one learn about high frequency trading ? Can you suggest books that mathematically model various instruments price movements such as stocks, options and futures ?

    Thanks in Advance!

    And the drama continues...

All I had asked was how the older IV core members were doing as I hadn't seen them online in over a year. But as usual a simple question like that and a request for some updates kicks up a storm!!

Once again, this was not to start a storm. I honestly just wanted to find out how the older core members were doing. WaldenPond, thanks for your first response.

I have been looking at opportunities elsewhere. However, in my field (not IT related), US is still a very good destination and my skills are also in demand in US and elsewhere. My home country, however, still lacks the basic infrastructure needed for me consider that as an option.

Nonetheless, as I said, if things don't improve by 2009, 2010 then I will be forced to consider other options such as australia/europe/canada. But I dont think I agree to "Quit America" just to prove a point. I will do what I think is best for my career and future; as the congress must do what they think is best for America's future. If given the chance, I will contribute to the continued success of this nation... else will move where my skills are in demand.

Meanwhile, get invoved in state chapters to convince congressmen about our plight, and let them decide about the country's future.

Check out the above website. 6039 is the one relating to STEM and it has 26 co-sponsors

If you're looking for a "hot" bill or a controversial issue that's been in the news recently, but you're not sure of its exact title, our page of Hot Bills by issue area is a great starting point for your search. There you can find groups of the most newsworthy bills, and in some cases the most contentious bills in Congress, as compiled by the editors of OpenCongress. It's a handy cheat-sheet of buzzworthy bills and their official titles. The OpenCongress Blog might have written about it recently too and may offer a helpful plain-language summary

As I said I am not economy guru, we can read history after 5 years. My point is gold was not inflation proof , last 50 years return was less than other investment types and high volatile.

If you are considering gold for investment how would physical gold differ from ETF?

For me it is easy to sell ETF from my desk since I would get same value as physical gold.

I would strongly disagree that H1 = cheap labor. It's only the H1B employer who pays low salaries, where as the client pays the same billing rate to all contractors (including US citizens).

I agree with you. I was just using those salary numbers as an example. Did not mean to imply that H1 indicates cheaper labor.

I agree with anands26 to an extent. We just need fresh ideas and activities going on while we wait for something to happen.

If we are not able to attract new members at a great rate we should atleast make sure we get to retain the existing strength.Word of mouth can only get you so much.

How about making professional grade media clips and posting the link on different websites? The one on IV we have now looks amateurish and doesnt quite do any justice to the org(with all due respects to the person in the clip). Its all about the outlook. People will tend to take us more seriously if we can do a few slick video clips with statistics, interviews(with different nationals) and such.Recruit an (not so expensive)Ad agency.Seeing is believing. It could probably boost the membership level too.Lets not sell ourselves short.

I also agree with anands26 on attacking the ideas instead of the person. If the leadership needs a slap on the hand so be it. Lets encourage some constructive criticism.Last week we witnessed a lot of personal attacks and guess who was doing it?

Ok, if advertising is too far-fetched, then hold some cultural events and make money on those. Brainstorm with members to find other ways to make money. People are not going to contribute. That is the writing on the wall. There is lack of trust and lack of faith in IV. IV will have to figure out ways to generate cash from other things than member contributions. If I remember correctly, people contributed nearly $200K and have got nothing to show for that.

These suggestions are because you think money is the issue. I don't think it is. It's the lack of good leadership. That is my opinion and it was point of my original posting. Lack of money is being blamed wrongly. But may be I am wrong.

Attack my ideas and not me. Then we can have a debate conducive to achieving our goals.

I know the post was entirely wrong and foolish.

But I feel that I am in the dark about IV activities for the past one year.
I am one of the silent IV Supporters and long time (from the beginning) monthly contributing IV Member.

It would be better to have a special thread/monthly bulleting page from IV to tell the members to know about IV activities or progress.

After the last year July fiasco issue I have not seen any posting about IV activities on the web site other than lot of threads and could not able to figure out the work IV is exactly doing.

I strongly believe because of IV core team only we were able to come through successful in July 2007 Bulletin issue. But do not know what else is IV doing for the past 12 months.

The Flowers, Letters and Phone Calls is not working as we expect. I do not know about other activities other than sending letters and phones during every congress session.

I believe IV need to do some thing different. There is no media reports about legal immigration issue (not for IV) for the past one year.

My perspective is that we need to find a way that Media and Public will aware of the issues we face every day.
I am not questioning the IV Core Team. It would be great if the IV members know some details about IV activities every month in a bulletin or thread etc.

    Thanks

... work with the congressmen and senators.

What will you do if you have convinced ALL lawmakers but they still do not vote for you because of public opposition generated by Lou DoGGS? The FACT (http://immigrationvoice.org/forum/showpost.php?p=98473&postcount=595) (NOT opinion) on immigration: In evident pain and remorse, a Republican Senator confessed to a Hispanic group from Maryland that his vote to kill immigration reform was a profile in political cowardice..

Todays New York's Id (http://immigrationvoice.org/forum/showpost.php?p=194883&postcount=1455) example:

Mr. Spitzers decision to abandon his plan comes as a poll released Tuesday by Siena College found that seven in 10 New York voters who had heard about it and more than 80 percent of the 625 registered voters polled had opposed it. It also found that for the first time, more people viewed the governor unfavorably than favorably.

The governor and his aides said that they were not reacting to the slumping poll numbers, but acting pragmatically. That the dispute had even tripped up Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, who stumbled to answer a question about it in a presidential debate, was symptomatic of where we were, he said.

The issue was gaining traction not based on thoughtful discourse, but based on sound bites and less than careful analysis, he added.

And the day these employees get their green cards, they will open they companies and will do the same thing to the new immigrants; and the circus will go on.

IMHO the entire IT industry is a bunch of frauds. Look at the thirsty CEOs who bankrupt companies and move on, look at the outsourcers who identify countries where labor is cheap and dump.

Sometime back, in India - IPC (Indian Penal Code) did not have any provision for cyber crime - so many people would justify - cyber crime is not wrong. Until laws came into picture - but it still goes on.

Unless system is cleansed and people are made to understand laws better and interpret them in the right way, things are not going to change at all
