if you are unmarried.. Please check with an attorney before filing i485:
http://www.murthy.com/news/n_benret.html
"Luxury of Additional Time to Find a Spouse
MurthyDotCom
Third, if one is unmarried, the I-485 applicant is given the luxury of more time to choose a spouse. That spouse can enjoy dependent benefits and obtain permanent resident status based on being married prior to approval of the I-485. This is a huge benefit to those who were intending marriage, but need more time for one reason or another. There is an enormous benefit to marrying prior to the approval of the I-485, rather than after. If the marriage takes place after the I-485 is approved, the case becomes a family case and the spouse can be stuck abroad waiting for several years.
Note: A spouse is not entitled to obtain the "green card" automatically simply by getting married before the I-485 is approved. A spouse who gets married before the I-485 is approved is allowed to file and obtain the H4 visa from abroad and enter the U.S. on an H4 status as long as the principal maintains H1B status.

Waiting for CIR bill for EB relif is not worthy. It will unlikley be passed in lame-duck congress, as t needs heavy conference. It may be the good idea to push SkIL bill or somesort of EB relief provison (like budget reconcilation bill last year) in other bills to be passed in lame duck period.

I second this. The speculation layer has to go away and only real gains made in housing should be visible. You might as well buy a house on foreclosure if you wait longer.

Just wondering why USCIS is neither accepting nor rejecting the July 2nd application? How long can thy hold applications like this? Can they leverage this in their favour in the class action lawsuit? Is this procrastination deliberate , considering its legal implications?
Both the AILA and USCIS are playing hide and seek. Who ever shows up first, basically looses. So both are still hiding and we are loosing our sleep. :)

Cannot argue with your experience. But I still think providing a convenient automatic way to pay small amounts for a specific period of time will help. (the suggestion of $30 over 6 months or 60 dollars over 6 months etc.) Sure people can do it on their own, schedule it, remember it and have the will to do it et al.
But when I put myself in the donor's shoes, it feels like the old times when there were no automated payments for electric bills. :D
This has been discussed umpteen number of times, but I am going to share a personal experience here (shared once already on a similar thread).
For the last state chapter (Diwali Mela) event in North CA we were accepting ANY AMOUNT for a contribution, but were suggesting $25 or $50.
How many contributed? About 20 from a state chapter that boasts of 150+ members.
The fact is, people do one of the following:
1. look at the recommended amount and contribute that amount (most of our donors were $25, and a few paid $50)
2. pay a high $ amount simply because (s)he is convinced he wants to help as much as possible! (Most of the volunteers for the event paid $50 or more, and three of them paid $90/$100 each)
3. DO NOT pay, no matter what, as they are not convinced it will help reduce their waiting time
One more time... IV is not turning anyone away. If you can only contribute $10 a month, please feel free to paypal it yourself to donations at immigrationvoice.org
Like the squirrel who helped Lord Rama construct the bridge (sorry for making this a slightly "Indian" post, but can't think of a better analogy) every small bit is going to help IV, and will be most appreciated!
However, the bridge to the GC is a long one, and our Lord Rama (IV) needs thousands of hard-working and contributing monkeys to make it a reality:D

In the US for 11 years now. - 7th year H1B
Thanks for starting this topic!!! This could be an emotional thread for a lot of us who are still waiting for this rediculously long process of GC!!!!
More frustrating when:
Waited for 3++ yrs for the labor cert (PD Sept 2002)
Just submitted I140 (6/2006) but have to endure the fear that my EB2 will be kicked to EB3, which means RETROGRESSION!
With H4, wife cannot work. Going to school is too expensive..i can't afford it with my small salary
Stucked with current company...being under appreciated and under utilized by the current employer...not a place for me to build my CAREER!!!
Have potential contract jobs/independent consultant positions available (recruiters contacted me) which pay 50% than what i am making now...but can't accept those offers bcos of GC!!!!
So so tempted to return home for good (sick and tired of the WAIT), but Everyone was saying "u had waited for years now, so why not wait for another year or so to get it..don't waste the golden opportunity" But...but...is it really going to be just another YEAR?
Sigh...sorry for venting...but i am really upset!
Going back to Career options...
**yeah, i would like to get a PMP cert, but it is pretty EXPENSIVE. But maybe some of us who done that can advice me.
**About buying houses....really clueless about it...really scare i will get ripped off by people..any advice?
** Yes..i want to know more about E-Visa and making $$ via online business!
Thanks all....

Guys, I'm not sure how useful this pole will be, since I suspect that those answering it will not be a statistically representative sample of IV membership, or it is at least hard to demonstrate that it is.

Your idea is good...But only people who will participate in this will be those who have already made the calls..
I don't think that those who couldn't spare 10 mins of day to make a call themselves will ask their friends or family members to call house members... And if they start calling by themselves... You and me won't be posting this message for taking help with Friends and Family... We have more than 30,000 members and time and again i reiterate that there must be more than 200 unique visitors for this thread.. SO PLEASE PLEASE>.. I urge all of you to do your part ...No one else have to post this message and ask you for support , if you call.
( No one would be reading this message untill he or she is stuck somewhere in the processing of their adjustment of status).. So why wait folks?
Your call to lawmakers is for your own benefit and befit of everyone of us..

Good news but sounds too good too be true. On an average a family takes away 2.5 visas and going by this only 50,000 applications for primary bene is pending.
So if they are giving this info to Senator for free why are they asking us to pay $5K for this; unless we requested different information.

Took my name, address and Bill #s.
Brian Bilbray California 50'th District
Left VM
Ken Calvert California 44'th District
Spoke to a lady named Rebecca, she sounded like she was not happy that she is receiving many calls from IV members. She was trying to tell me that she has received the message and will pass it on to Rep, but further calls are not going to help.
Once I asked her "Are you suggesting that we (IV members) should not be calling your office regarding this important bills", she toned down a bit and took my message.
Jerry Lewis California 41'st District
Spoke to the concerned person; she took my name, address and Bill #s.
John Campbell California 48'th District
Took my name, address and Bill #s.
Gary Miller California 42'nd District
Left a VM.
Question for people who understand Washington better than me.
Do we really have to ask for the person who handles legislative and immigration matters or it is ok to leave message to the person who answers the phone? I guess the answer is its better to talk to the person who handles immigration matters, but as per my observation, immigration person in representatives office deals with any immigration issues related to constituents.

Hey buddy sc3, How are you this morning. I just have to go to a meeting in another few minutes. Would you be around today? We have to continue our discussion from the other day. I feel like learning a lot from you and I love discussing with you. Please stick around and I will be back soon. Please don't go, ok. In the meantime, here is an excellent video you may want to watch in the meantime.
This is really good.

Doing good, thank you. How about yourself? Sanju, with all these candies you are throwing at us, I am thinking that you might be the one my parents used to warn about (dont talk to strangers who offer you candies). So now I am very scared, you seem to have taken quite a liking to my thoughts, which scares me too (rest assured, I called dateline NBC too!, Chris Hansen is a nice person to talk to).
You want to discuss more, well there is a problem, I am not a debater. I never won any debating contests. I see the points all of you are making, and, while I can understand where from it is coming. On a bleak day, I do commiserate with it - heck I do sometimes even cross over to play the devils advocate (Note: it is an expression, I am not saying we Indians are devils (I need to clarify, because there are some who take literal meaning at times)), but in the end, I have to come back to the quota being an enabler to control the "rush" of applicants.
Some have said that EB is based solely on "merits", and that I am inventing my own intent (of diversity). No I am not, look it up. The per-country quota system is mentioned in the statues even before family or EB is discussed. Family based immigration have the per country quota too (why should an Indian Family suffer for X years, while families of other countries are able to unite sooner), but I dont see that we asked to remove the the quota completely. We only asked for removal in EB (but that is deviating from the topic).
I am not anti-immigrant, just because I argue against some provisions does not make me anti-immigrant (well the same charge will be leveled against us by CIR folks because we dont take/support their approach), and no I dont yet have my GC. I may be whatever, but I will not burn the bridge after crossing it (though I have been known to burn the bridge while I am still on it).
Yes, laws can (and shall) be changed, but can't we discuss the good and bad of what we are changing? I have seen many a legislation that have good intent at heart, but many times ends up without checks and balances (and eventually misused).
This is really good.

Looks like you are one of the beneficiaries of H1 who does not have good education. You can console yourself with the word 'skill' and all that computer jargon The bottomline is H1B visa is for professionals.
Stop making personal attacks.
You know nothing about me or my education or my skills.
By resorting to personal attacks to try and support you arguments you have revealed your level of character and intelligence in how debates are conducted.
I don't support IT bodyshops and that fraud should stop.
If you believe you have proof of shady practices then report them to USCIS.

Are you kidding? It's not that people cannot contribute but they won't. Everyone in this forum makes good money than an average American and in fact per capita income of Indians in United States is much higher than the per capita income of this country; yet only 2.5% of the people chose to contribute. That shows the resolve of this community to get any kind of relief yet we all complain why illegals get preferential treatment. Because they are vocal and determined to get some relief. They come out in large numbers all over the country to protest and make their voices heard and here we can hardly find anyone willing to tell their story to the media.
In conclusion, it's not that we don't have the money .. we are not willing to contribute and are too busy questioning IV's motive and financials. We would rather pay 20k for sub labor than 20 dollar for IV and this is the attitude which will take us no where in terms of any relief for legal community. God help us all.
if people cannot contribute financially, conrtibute your time and talk to people about IV.

I appeared for an interview on Jan 2nd. It took the consulate officers 16 days to call me and ask for original documents again. Darn PIMS verification! I resubmitted the documents on Jan 22nd through the drop box... and have been calling them daily to track the progress. They say they need 7 working days from the day the documents are received. I have already had to reschedule the flights once..and my employer is getting worried now. If I had known about the delays at Chennai post before, I wont have applied here. Chennai sux!!!
